Arrow season 4 spoilers: Emily Bett's Felicity to get a codename

The future of "Arrow" in the upcoming season 5 may carry a chance yet for the possible revival of the relationship between Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak, going by the words of one of the CW show's executive producers.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight about the show's next season, "Arrow" executive producer Wendy Mericle dropped some hints about what may become of the romantic relationship between longtime partners in fighting crime Oliver and Felicity; a pairing the fans have taken to dubbing "Olicity." Stephen Amell plays main protagonist Oliver Queen, while Felicity Smoak is played by Emily Bett Rickards.

Mericle said that both characters will have a tough time dealing with the aftermath of the previous season's events when the next one begins. Fans will remember the characters' relationship as one of the most hotly anticipated in the show's storyline after Oliver's many romantic flames. The characters showed a lot of chemistry during their initial interactions in the earlier episodes, eventually culminating in a full blown relationship in a finale of the third season.

Unfortunately, the relationship proved disastrous for both characters in and out of the universe at it was commonly brought up during Oliver's struggles with his vigilante persona with some fans eventually becoming exasperated at the arc. They eventually broke up in the final stages of season 4, after originally planning to marry, and it looked like there would be no signs of any possible rekindling.

Mericle said that when the next season of "Arrow" begins, "they're not together when we come back" as Oliver is busy being both mayor and vigilante savior of Star City while Felicity is trying to cope with the fact that she personally caused the deaths of 20, 000 people in the process of saving millions.

Although Mericle did not give any further hints of what might come next for the pairing, the specific words she used suggests that there is still the possibility, at least, of Oliver and Felicity getting back together though the road leading there will be very rocky.

"The relationship, much to the chagrin to the Laurel fans, was borne out of that symbiotic relationship between the writers, what we were seeing on the dailies and the actors. We're going to stay consistent on that," Mericle explained. "We're going to continue to see where these characters lead us. So it could go where the Olicity fans want... or not."

In other words, "Olicity" fans can still hold on to hope.

"Arrow" will return on The CW Oct. 5.
