In the 21st century, one might think that stark cultural differences are greatly subdued due to the globalized nature of the world. However, this doesn't seem to be the case as the 2016 Rio Olympics highlighted a distinct difference in cultures: clothing. The volleyball players of Germany entered the arena with their usual choice of bikinis while in great contrast, the Egyptian team donned long sleeves and leggings as part of their Islamic origin.

Undeterred by Olympian customs when it comes to light, almost naked clothing, the Egyptian representatives pushed through with their intent to enter the once-in-a-lifetime event though cultural conventions may have prevented them from doing so. A hijab worn by Doaa Elgobashy of Egypt added to the apparent differences in their cultures. She mentioned that even though she has been wearing it for ten years, is not a hindrance to her love for volleyball. The match ended with Germany winning by 2-0.

An addition of 26 countries have participated this year compared to the London Olympics ever since they loosened the rules regarding clothing. The Olympics intend to promote unity and awareness and this volleyball event is a representation of that especially for the viewers. As mentioned, Middle Eastern countries like Egypt who have not previously participated are now part of this international sports event. This is a great start to increase the Olympics' reservoir of talents and we will expect to see more countries in the future who are encouraged by the new rule. The global community is getting to know them better through sports. As a way to showcase them, the Olympics just proves that there is no division in cultural groups when it comes to the world of sports.
