Hulu is planning to launch a virtual reality application this November, one that enables subscribers to stream their content library in an immersive 3D format, as reported in Mashable. This is in conjunction with Samsung's Gear VR, a headset capable of 3D playback.

According to the site, the Hulu virtual reality app works by having subscribers log on directly to the application through a compatible VR device. Hulu promises an immersive experience that lets viewers control their viewing environments. Viewers can watch the content in 2D, but have unique viewing environments to improve their experience.

The content format will still be the same, 2D, but with additional virtual enhancements, as explained in Hulu's blog. These enhancements include watching in a comfortable living room, a cinema packed full of people, or even in Seinfeld's couch. With virtual reality enabled, they can look around, scan the surroundings, and completely immerse in the environment.

Currently, Samsung's Gear VR is the only consumer-ready device compatible with the Hulu virtual reality app. The device is set to launch in November, alongside Hulu's VR app. Aside from Hulu, there are several apps already lined up for Gear VR. This includes Netflix, Vimeo, and Twitch, the videogame streaming service, according to Engadget.

Hulu's virtual reality app will pioneer a new kind of content consumption, complete with simulated environments and unique visual experiences. Hulu promises to create cinematic VR films in the future, so that viewers will be able to maximize the app and the Gear VR's potential. Already in the works is a VR short film entitled "The Big One," in partnership with Lionsgate and Freddie Wong's RocketJump. Hulu will explore other partnerships to create more shows and films, and possibly pave the way for user-generated virtual reality content.

Hulu has not announced any pricing scheme for the app and the service. Samsung's Gear VR will be sold for $99.
