‘Evangelion’ 3.33 Blu-Ray/DVD Release Date Confirmed; Final Movie Delayed?
Funimation Entertainment announced at recently-concluded New York Comic Con on Saturday, Oct. 10 that the "Evangelion" 3.33 Blu-ray/DVD release date has been confirmed for 2016 according to Anime News Network.
Released as "Evangelion 3.0" in Japan with the title "You Can (Not) Redo," it premiered on Nov. 2012and ran a box office record of $60 million. This is the third of director Hideaki Anno's "Rebuild of Evangelion" tetralogy film series, with the last one titled as "Evangelion 3.0+1.0." While the films hewed closely to the original TV series, all of them have different storylines.
The "Evangelion" 3.33 Blu-ray/DVD release date for North America was originally scheduled for Feb. 2014, however the project suffered a delay as during those times, the distributor company was working directly with Studio Khara - the production studio behind the "Evangelion" films - so the studio could have its own special subtitle tracks according to IGN.
Funimation and Eleven Arts screened the theatrical version of the film across US and Canadian theaters in January last year. The studio is not going to release the theatrical version for this movie.
Meanwhile, the release date of the upcoming fourth and final movie "Evangelion 3.0+1.0" might be delayed as Anno is currently working with Toho for the upcoming "Godzilla" movie. It was originally slated for release later this year. Japanese pop star Hikaru Utada is said to provide the soundtrack for the final film, as she previously wrote her single "Sakura Nagashi" for the previous movie despite her current hiatus.
The "Rebuild of Evangelion" series started out in 2007 with the release of "1.0 You Are (Not) Alone", which earned $18.8 million at box office in Japan alone. Meanwhile, the "Evangelion" anime series just marked its 20th anniversary of release last Oct. 4 by premiering the very first episode on the exact time 20 years ago at selected large-screen monitors in major Japanese cities.
