Big Bang Members G-Dragon And Taeyang's Video 'Good Boy' Approaches 100 Million YouTube Views As K-Pop Band's Future Remains Uncertain
With the fate of K-pop boy band Big Bang hanging in the balance pending the five members' mandatory military service in South Korea, their music remains as popular as ever.
This week, Big Bang members G-Dragon and Taeyang's 2014 single "Good Boy" surpassed 98 million views on the video streaming website YouTube, quickly closing in on 100 million. Directed by the Grammy Award-nominated American, Colin Tilley, "Good Boy" was released under the moniker GD X TAEYANG.
"When the video surpasses 100 million views, Big Bang becomes the first Korean idol group who has more than three music videos that have reached 100 million views on YouTube, including 'Fantastic Baby' and 'Bang Bang Bang,'" read a press release published Wednesday on the website for Big Bang's record label, YG Entertainment.
The YG press release also included a glimpse into Big Bang's confirmed performance schedule in the coming months.
"Big Bang has recently carrying out a fan-meeting tour in China," the record label release read. "This summer, Big Bang will come back to Korean fans and hold a concert to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut."
But beyond that, details about the band's future get hazy, to say the least.
All eligible males between the ages of 18 and 35 currently must enroll for between 21 and 24 months of military service in South Korea (the length of mandatory enrollment changes by several months depending on which branch of the military that they serve in). In an interview earlier this month with the Washington Post, G-Dragon avoided giving the paper any timetable for the band's enlistment.
"If we're going to talk about that, we'll feel sad," he said, before cracking up. "I'm just kidding,"
On a stop in Tokyo, Japan as part of the group's juggernaut MADE world tour, the singer declined to offer any specifics.
"We are Korean, so we have to go someday, but I don't know when it's going to be," he said. "Until then, we'll just try hard to do what we got to do."
