Vatican Reacts To ‘Spotlight’: Academy Award-Winning Piece Dedicated To Journalists Everywhere

by Jason Ocampo / Mar 03, 2016 08:46 PM EST

Academy-award winning film "Spotlight" has gained an unusual ally: The Vatican itself, whose reaction to the film was by calling it "not anti-Catholic."

According to a post at the Vatican's official newsletter, the Osservatore Romano, the film "manages to voice the shock and profound pain of the faithful confronting the discovery of these horrendous realities."

At this point, this has been the church's response to allegations of sexual abuse by priests who are members of one of the largest religious organizations in the world.

The release called children "vulnerable beings" and anyone could become a victim.

According to the site, however, the wearing of the cassock does not automatically mean that that person is given authority over a vulnerable victim.

"All this cannot justify the extremely grave fault of those who, while seen as God's representatives, use this authority and prestige to exploit the innocent," the Vatican reaction to "Spotlight" said.

According to the Boston Globe, reporters and journalists from all over the world tweeted how happy they were that their lives were being featured in a positive light.

The victims of the sex abuse, meanwhile, have mixed feelings about how they feel about "Spotlight's" win.

On one hand, the victims of sexual abuse by the clergy finally found a voice that could speak to them.

It was, however, also learned that there were others like them who are still afraid to face their own problems.

Mashable wrote that one of the major themes of "Spotlight" was the heroism of journalists.

"In other words, the movie makes journalists look like something they haven't been in a long time: heroes," the document said.

"'Spotlight" is the true story of the investigative journalists of The Boston Globe who exposed the scale and the cover up surrounding pedophile priests in the Catholic Church. The series rocked the Catholic Church, shook the faith of thousands of Catholics, not just in Boston, but across the country and around the world," Public Integrity wrote of the film outfit.

Public Integrity, meanwhile, called for support to investigative journalism endeavors even if they might instigate a reaction from Vatican like "Spotlight."
