Oscar Isaac Is ‘Star Wars’ First Openly Gay Character? JJ Abrams Confirms Inclusivity Rumors
Fans of "Star Wars" may just be getting what they want in a story line "from a galaxy far, far away," with JJ Abrams confirming that the franchise will soon be getting an openly gay character rumored to be Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron.
The Daily Beast wrote of Abrams' confirmation that the production team was already in talks of including a gay character in the next installments of the "Star Wars" franchise.
"The director of 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' says you can expect to see future 'Star Wars' films be even more inclusive-including gay characters," The Daily Beast wrote.
Abrams was quoted as saying "Of course!" to a question regarding opening up a role for an expansion of Isaac's role.
"When I talk about inclusivity it's not excluding gay characters. It's about inclusivity. So of course."
Abrams said the "Star Wars" continuity would not be complete if it did not include more diverse characters.
"To me, the fun of 'Star Wars' is the glory of possibility. So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."
The internet then went abuzz about the potential romance between Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron and John Boyega's Finn in the upcoming "Star Wars" installment. This also came after months of speculation.
"Who wouldn't ship Boyega's Finn and Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron?" The Daily Beast said.
Zap 2 It, in another post, was among those that speculated about the pairing.
"Almost immediately after the film was released, fans began seizing on certain key lines and looks that the two characters seem to give each other, speculating that perhaps a romance could be blossoming," the news site said.
Earlier, Out.com came out with a list of 10 reasons Poe Dameron was gay, with hilarious results.
Among the reasons were his search for "a guy with his own island," having "a strong threshold for pain," having a cute accessory in BB8, giving Finn a nickname, and jumping into Finn's arms, which was even described as "like that scene in The Notebook, but in a galaxy far, far away."
Of course, there's also Oscar Isaac's character's hair in "Star Wars."
"It's not the standard military buzz cut. Yet, it manages to stay perfectly coiffed even under a helmet at the height of battle."
