Will Ryan Reynold's On-Screen Girlfriend To Finally Appear As Copycat In 'Deadpool' Sequel?
20th Century Fox's "Deadpool" opened to critical acclaim and producers have already signed Ryan Reynolds for a sequel.
Director Tim Miller's big screen adaptation of the character drew heavily from the Joe Kelly era of the franchise, Kelly being the first to spearhead the "Deadpool" solo comics.
However, there's a lot of content from the source material that didn't make it into the movie.
One particular storyline that lacked development was Ryan Reynold's on-screen girlfriend Vanessa Carlysle a.k.a. Copycat.
She was introduced as a tough stripper who is more than capable of holding her own, although the character mainly functioned as a love interest throughout the film.
However, she did stab the main villain in the back during the final battle and proved that she wasn't just your run-of-the-mill superhero's girlfriend.
According to Movie Pilot, the Copycat in the comics is a mutant with blue skin that has shape-shifting abilities, much like X-Men's Mystique.
"She's been around in the comics since the early 90s, coming into being the same issue of The New Mutants that Deadpool did, and she's an incredibly skilled metamorph," the publication wrote. "She can imitate another person down to their cellular level, and is able to replicate other mutant's powers by touching them. She's also demonstrated the ability to turn into animals."
As Entertainment Weekly points out, producers may have held back on developing the character in the first installment so that they could expand her role in the sequel.
"Like in the Comic Vanessa, Baccarin is a stripper slash maybe prostitute," the publication explained. "Unlike Comic Vanessa, Baccarin isn't a shapeshifter. Maybe they're saving that for 'Deadpool 2.'"
"Deadpool" stars Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson a.k.a. Deadpool, Morena Baccarin as Vanessa Carlysle a.k.a. Copycat, T.J. Miller as Weasel, Gina Carano as Angel Dust and Ed Skrein as Ajax.
"Deadpool" is currently screening in theaters. The sequel has no official release date yet.
