Gamers can now heave a sigh of relief, as Microsoft has announced that "Dark Souls" will soon be playable on the Xbox One via the console's backwards compatibility feature.

According to GameSpot, this officially confirmed a Feb. 15 "leak" revealing that the highly-popular role playing game will be available on the Xbox One for free for those who pre-order "Dark Souls 3."

It was however unclear if the "Dark Souls" release, which can be downloaded for a "limited" period using Xbox One backwards compatibility, was only the base game or also included the "Artorias of the Abyss" DLC.

"Dark Souls 3" will be launched on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on Apr. 12.

Earlier this month, Rockstar Game's "Red Dead Redemption " was also included on the list of Xbox One games that could be accessed by users through the backwards compatibility library.

Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to take out the game from the library, saying that it was "mistakenly made available."

"Microsoft tests all Xbox 360 games with our [backwards compatibility] emulator to ensure a quality experience across a breadth of titles," explained Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb. "Due to an error, some of the games currently in test were accidentally made available.

"We have since removed access to those games, and apologize for any confusion this may have caused," Hyrb added. "We will have more information on upcoming releases soon."

In the meantime, "Hitman: Absolution" has been added to the fast growing list of Xbox One backwards compatibility playable games, Tech Times reported.

This was announced by game publishers Square Enix and IO Interactive during a media event in San Francisco last month.

There is however no confirmation yet on the game's official release date.

Other popular titles that can be played through the Xbox One backwards compatibility feature include "Call of Duty: Black Ops," "Halo Wars," "BioShock" and "Burnout Paradise."
