Why Did Amir Khan’s Pick Canelo Alvarez For Next Fight? Let Mayweather Tell You Why
Amir Khan's next fight would be against Saul Canelo Alvarez, the same fighter who was already beaten by Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Mayweather, who ended his career with a 49-0 record, fought Alvarez in 2013. There is some sort of pattern here and according to Floyd, Khan is copying what he did.
"That's the reason Amir Khan took the fight because he thinks he's going to be able to do the same thing that I did," Mayweather told Fight Hype when asked about Amir Khan choosing Canelo Alvarez for his next fight.
"It's totally different. Canelo, he's young and he's very strong and he's very, very big," he said.
"But with me, I had so much experience at the top level, and it's just that I've been in there with so many different styles, with so many different strong guys. I know how to make adjustments, and I know how to adapt to any style."
Mayweather won the fight with Alvarez with two judges voting in his favor. The other judge called it even.
In the fight against Canelo Alvarez, Amir Khan is the challenger and many think he is the underdog.
However, Boxing News 24 argued that Khan has a better chance of beating the Mexican than Mayweather, who only survived due to his high IQ and ring savvy.
"Khan has arguably better physical tools than Mayweather had in his fight against Canelo," the publication wrote.
"Khan has the faster hands, better jab, superior punching power, and he's a lot quicker on his feet than Mayweather was when he fought Canelo."
The article added, "In many ways, Khan is a better version of Mayweather physically. What Khan doesn't have that Mayweather had in the Canelo fight was the ring IQ, and the discipline to not get greedy. Mayweather also might have had a better chin than Khan. But if Khan can fight smart and use the Mayweather blueprint on Canelo, I think it's a very winnable fight for Khan."
The fight between Amir Khan and Canelo Alvarez is scheduled on May 7.
