The iconic costume at a scene in Return of the Jedi

Remember that popular gold bikini worn by Carrie Fisher in 1983 Star Wars sequel film "The Return of the Jedi"? Well, the iconic Princess Leia Bikini has been sold for whopping $96,000 at an online auction, BBC reports.

The said auction also included a miniature model of Leia's "Blockade Runner" - the first spaceship seen in 1977's "Star Wars," which sold for $450,000 which is more than twice its $200,000 opening bid.

The Princess Leia Bikini, which is supposed to be a "slave" costume which includes a collar and several chain links, was originally worn by Fisher in a scene at Jabba the Hutt's palace on the desert planet of Tatooine. A letter of authenticity has been provided by designer Richard Miller of the special effects company Industrial Light and Magic was included in the sale to an anonymous bidder by the Hollywood auctioneer Profiles in History which was held on Oct. 2 as reported by The Guardian.

The said costume was made of "flexible, gold-painted red dense-urethane rubber." Eventually it became a hot item in pop culture history. The actress once wore it on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine to promote the movie and her Madame Tussauds wax figure features the iconic outfit.

However, the actress herself is not fan of the Princess Leia Bikini. She expressed her disinterest in keeping the costume after shooting the film to the press. When she was asked, Fisher commented, "Why would I keep a stupid outfit like that? So that years later I could say to you I have it?"

Quite a number of celebrities have seen wearing the popular Princess Leia Bikini, such as Melissa Joan Hart, Kerri Kasem, Phoebe Price and popular Canadian cosplayer and host Liana K.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is directed by JJ Abrams. It will premiere on Dec. 17 in UK and a day later in US.
