Black Panther' Movie News: Dubbed 'Historic;' Screenwriter Joe Robert Cole Release Statement!
The "Black Panther" movie is making news amid Hollywood's ongoing race and ethnicity issues. In an interview reported by Motherjones.com, screenwriter Joe Robert Cole promised that the film will be "historic."
The original comic book was written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, with the big screen adaptation headed by "Creed" and "Fruitvale Station" director Ryan Coogler.
Chadwick Boseman will be playing the lead role of "Black Panther" in the movie and is making news for being Marvel's first superhero of color.
"Black Panther is a historic opportunity to be a part of something important and special, particularly at a time when African Americans are affirming their identities while dealing with vilification and dehumanization," Joe Robert Cole explained.
"The image of a black hero on this scale is just really exciting," he added.
The screenwriter, who previously worked in the 2011 indie thriller "Amber Lake" and Summit's alien invasion project "Revoc," narrated how he always wanted to have a black superhero to promote his race.
"When I was a kid, I would change superheroes' names," he shared. "Instead of James Bond, I was James Black. Instead of Batman, I was Blackman."
The relevance of "Black Panther" the movie is admittedly due to news about Hollywood's race issues, which were highlighted by how this year's Oscars nominees for major categories are predominantly white.
Joe Robert Cole explained that the team behind "Black Panther" wants the movie to make news for all the right reasons.
"We all are cognizant of what's going on in the world, in black communities, and in our country," he said. "We are aware of the importance of that, and the platform this movie provides us with."
A previous report from The Wrap shared how the team behind the Marvel film is specific about getting people of different races on board for the movie.
On a personal note, the screenwriter admitted that he is specifically excited at how "Black Panther" will inspire his own child.
"I have a three-year-old son," the screenwriter said. "He will be five when Black Panther comes out. That puts it all into perspective for me."
