Followers of "Tokyo Ghoul" were pumped up after a news update hinted that season 3 was scheduled for a winter 2016 release date.

However, the report from Anime Maru, which was also largely quoted by various online sites, turned out to be one elaborate joke, according to the Inquistr

The confusion all started when Anime Maru announced that "the series will air during the Winter 2016 anime season, and Madhouse will be taking over the animation from Studio Pierrot."

As the false news update on "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 created a backlash among die-hard fans of the series, Anime Maru admitted that the site is purely "a satirical publication."

"Nothing on this site should be interpreted as factual nor as a claim to fact... In conclusion, Anime Maru is fake anime news," the online anime portal declared.

On the other hand, FUNimation Entertainment CEO Gen Fukunaga, assuaged fans' apprehensions, as he confirmed that "Tokyo Ghoul" is already gearing up for a 2016 premiere.

In line with this development, Fukunaga also indicated that a game of the same title might also be rolled out.

"Ever since we began simulcasting the anime series last year, fans of Tokyo Ghoul have been clamoring for a mobile game," Fukunaga stated in a press release.

"With Season 2 now finished and Season 3 set for 2016, the anticipation for the game has only grown higher," he added.

Meanwhile, a related news update from Cross Map on "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 reported that several petitions have already been posted online asking for a "reboot" of the highly popular anime series.

The petitions have stemmed from numerous complaints among the show's followers that Studio Perrot has diverted from the original manga storyline.

As proof of fans' dissatisfaction, the online site Reboot Petition has already garnered more than 2,000 votes since Jan. 17 of this year.

This figure is a big jump from the 500 votes the petition got when it was posted in March of 2015.

Please stay tuned in to this site for more news updates on the release date and more of "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3.
