Police are still investigating the cause of death of Dave Mirra's death, following word that the multi-awarded X Games athlete's body had been found dead in a truck Thursday night.

Mirra was 41 years old.

The Guardian  quoted the statement of Allen Thomas, Greenville Mayor, who celebrated the achievements of the popular athlete who was an important part of the community.

"We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift," Thomas was quoted as saying.

"He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon."

E! Online noted that Mirra was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while the X Games' athlete's body was found seated inside his truck.

"The world of extreme sports is mourning a huge loss today," said the news site of David Mirra's death.

Greenville Police revealed through their Facebook page that police officers responded to reports that there was a suicide in the area at Pinewood Road, 4pm Thursday.

"Upon arrival, officers discovered Dave Mirra, 41, of Greenville, sitting in a truck with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had been visiting friends in the area a short time before the incident," the police statement said.

Prior to his death, David Mirra's collected accolades including being named Freestyler of the Year by BMX Magazine as well as the ESPN Action Sports and Music Award for BMX Rider of the Year.

After his short gig as host of Real World / Road Rules Challenge shown on MTV, the X Games athlete and his wife settled in Greenville, North Carolina. The place has since been called "the hub of the BMX world."
