‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Release Date Set For January 2017? Is Moriarty Coming Back?

After airing "The Abominable Bride" fans have grown increasingly excited to find out when exactly the "Sherlock" season 4 release date is.

A previous interview by show creator Steven Moffat revealed that filming has indeed been scheduled. 

The executive producer has emphasized time and time again that pinning down lead stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman is incredibly difficult.

Both actors are already acclaimed internationally and have been receiving various offers to star in huge film productions.

Nevertheless, filming will reportedly start around Spring this year.

Aside from producers Moffat and Mark Gatiss' promises about Sherlock Holmes' upcoming adventures, PBS President Paula Kreger recently assured fans that a new season is indeed coming up soon.

Although an exact "Sherlock" season 4 release date was not announced, Kreger assured avid followers that they can once again watch Cumberbatch solve crimes as the genius detective sometime next year.

"We do have the next Sherlock announced, that is coming up about a year from now,"  the PBS CEO announced at the 2016 TCA winter press as reported by Zap2It.

"As you know, Benedict has gotten to be somewhat popular since we began our work with him and he very much wants to continue with Sherlock. As you know, they are produced almost like films, and we're hoping the next one will be about a year from now."

The special episode which gave viewers a peek inside Sherlock's complex mind palace, revealed that the detective didn't believe Moriarty was alive, despite his sudden appearance in the latter part of the season three finale.

"Of course, Moriarty is dead," he told his brother, Mycroft, as well as John and Mary Watson, after coming out of the drug-induced trip to his subconscious. "And I know exactly what he's going to do next."

Gatiss also warned fans of an upcoming "major, life-changing" season for the characters of the show, promising that "big stuff" will happen.
