David Bowie death: Musician auditioned as Gandalf in LOTR?

It seems like the legend of David Bowie before his untimely death keeps haunting fans every day.

Millions may have been heartbroken after Ziggy Stardust lost his battle with cancer but with every new information people learn about him every day, hearts are once again filled with joy.

For example, these details about David Bowie's "Lord of the Rings" audition about 15 years ago.

In an interview with The Huffington Post, actor Dominic Monaghan, who played the role of Merry (Meriadoc Brandybuck) in the mega phenomenal film franchise, recounted his encounter with the musician as he was auditioning for a role.

"I was at the Hubbard's, which is a pretty notorious casting agency office in London, doing an audition for 'Lord of the Rings,'" Monaghan recalled. "And when it ended I went over and talked to John Hubbard, who was running the audition, and he said, 'Hey, it went really well. You should wait around for 5 or 10 mins. We'll give you some feedback."

"I thought, 'Oh, OK, cool, and I sat in the reception office. As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in."

Before David Bowie's death, various reports have said that the musician auditioned for the role of the half-elven Lord of Rivendell, Elrond in "Lord of the Rings." However, according to Monaghan, Bowie might have been auditioning for Gandalf.

"I'm assuming he read for Gandalf. I can't think of anything else he would've read for," said Dominic Monaghan. "He may have read for something else, but I'm a huge David Bowie fan, and I was lucky enough to know his son now so just seeing him in person was pretty special to me."

On Jan. 10, David Bowie's team announced the legendary music icon's death on Facebook, which crushed the hearts of his fans.

"David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer," read the statement. "While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family's privacy during their time of grief."
