South Korea, Hong Kong, China and Japan Shivered to Biggest Snowfall Recorded in Recent Years
Famous vacation destination Jeju island in South Korea have reportedly had its biggest snowfall in three decades, causing thousand of visitors stranded and over a hundred flights cancelled Monday, according to a report by BBC.
Over 517 scheduled flights were cancelled this weekend. On Monday, about 60 flights were cancelled, following the 11cm (4.3in) of snow making it impossible for planes and roads to function.
Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, the lowest temperature in nearly 60 years has been recorded. Residents shivered to nature's toll over the weekend.
In a city government website-issued statement, residents are advised to put on warm clothes and to avoid prolonged exposure to wintry winds, due to the very cold and windy weather in Hong Kong.
While some adventurous hikers opt to climb Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong's highest mountain amidst the freezing weather.
According to one hiker, the weather report might have sounded like there is frost up in the mountains, so he came to check it out. While another mountaineer said that at first, there was no rain, but it rained quite heavily at 4am and so, he can't climb his way up to the top because of the slippery trail. Other statements went like it is nothing as something bad if enough clothes are worn to resist the cold, while some said that the weather is far too cold, it felt nothing like Hong Kong which is supposed to be warm. "Hong Kong is supposed to be warm. This is not Hong Kong," one statement read.
Tragic events unfold following the freezing phenomenon in Japan. In a report by Kyodo news agency, five people had died and about a hundred had been listed injured in weather-related accidents across the country on Monday.
The report also said that Amami Island, which is 380km south-west of Kagoshima City snowed for the first time in 115 years.
