Oscar Isaac Feels Weird About ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Role Despite Reaching Stardom?
The role of maverick pilot Poe Dameron in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" may have brought Oscar Isaac unprecedented recognition, but the Guatemalan actor feels wierd about the whole thing.
According to an interview with GQ Magazine, as shared by Latin Correspondent, Isaac talks about his experience with his director J.J. Abrams and his vision for the character.
"I was like, what am I doing here?" he said. "There was not a lot of room to shade in the character. Every time I tried to do that, it would slow things down too much. J.J. would be like, 'Get on with it, man!' Just, Louder! Faster! And then I would feel like I was doing that all the time. It felt weird and like I was not being creative."
But J.J. Abrams claimed that Oscar Isaac is a great actor and he is one of the reasons for the success of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
"Oscar's concerns about making the character feel alive and authentic is the exact reason he's a great actor," he said. "This is a hero that you need to believe is also a human being. And he gave the role a nuance that I think made it one of the strongest in the movie."
In an interview with Fandango, as shared by Tech Insider, the actor referenced his Latin heritage when he accepted the role of Poe Dameron in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
"I was born in Guatemala, and one of Guatemala's biggest claims to fame is that Guatemala is featured in the end of 'A New Hope,' at the medal ceremony, that was filmed ... in Tikal, Guatemala," said Isaac.
"So I said, 'How cool would it be if that's where Poe was from?!' You know, he's a Rebel fighter, that's where the Rebel base is, why wouldn't he be there? That's an incredible idea."
As per Mary Sue, Oscar Isaac offered some thoughts about diversity in "Star Wars: A New Hope" as he said, "the guy from Star Wars is definitely not Latino. He's from a galaxy far, far away.
He then went on to say, "It's difficult for people who look like not the status quo in this country to get great roles. I feel humbled and honored and blessed to have been able to do that. Hopefully that will happen more."
