Planned Parenthood News: Anti-Abortion Activists On Pressed Charges By Grand Jury; Have The Tables Turned?
News about the issue with planned parenthood in Texas has been making headlines as of late, as a grand jury concluded the case with the issuance of a number of charges.
According to news website The New York Times, the catch with the current situation is that the jury is not pressing charges against the women's healthcare provider, but to two persons who are anti-abortion who had encouraged the investigation.
David Daleiden and Sandra Merritt were indicted by the grand jury for tampering with a governmental record, according to the announcement made by the District Attorney's office. The said jury was convened by the Harris County district attorney's office. In addition, Daleiden got another indictment under a law not allowing purchase and sale of human organs.
Daleiden is the founder of the Center for Medical Progress group. News website The Guardian added that the same group that made a number of sting videos arranged to make it look like Planned Parenthood employees selling fetal tissue. These videos were released to prove that the non-profit organization is in violation of federal law.
The New-York based organization denied the accusations, saying that it donates fetal tissue in support of medical research companies and that they are not asking for monetary compensation in return. They also added that the only time they will receive money is only for the reimbursement of transportation and storage costs. In fact, the org recently announced that they will no longer accept reimbursements.
The allegations in the videos that have been in the news lately have long been disproved together with a number of state-level investigations which the grand jury thought that Planned Parenthood had done nothing wrong. However, the videos were taken seriously and resulted in five separate congressional investigations.
News-worthy Planned Parenthood (or Planned Parenthood Federation of America or PPFA) is a non-profit organization the brings reproductive health services in the US and internationally.
