August Cultural Events in South Korea
With Korea celebrating the 70th anniversary of its liberation from Japan's rule on August 15, the month presents a series of cultural events in Seoul that locals and tourists shouldn't miss.
First, the National Hangeul Museum will hold activities from August 11-16. The museum's experts will offer discussions on the 'Dongnip Sinmun', a document available only in Korean language and published between 1896 and 1899. There will also be presentations regarding the first Hangeul dictionary and other artifacts related to the national language. Those interested in catching these activities can visit the museum at 11 a.m. or 4 p.m.
The Sookmyung Gayagum Orchestra will also entertain visitors at 4 p.m. starting August 12. They will play traditional folk songs, like Arirang, as well as modern interpretations of notable international folk songs. And on Saturday, August 15, Professor Park Yong-gyu of Korea University will have a lecture at 2 p.m.
The city has more events lined up. According to the local government on August 6, there will be a 'Seoul Culture Night' on August 28 and 29. The event, which has been organized for eight years, aims to highlight the city's nightspots and attractions.
The two-night celebration invites everyone to register on the website seoulculturenight.com by August 12 in order to participate in the activities, which include tours and exhibitions throughout the metropolitan. There will be musical performances in Dongdaemun Design Plaza as well as national folkdance at Seoul Plaza.
These are not the only events awaiting people who are planning to visit the country in August. The Korea Grand Sale will happen early, on August 14, to kick off the 70th Liberation Day.
