Oscars 2016 Boycott Intensifies; Dannny DeVito, Will Smith Join In On Diversity Issue
The all-white list of nominated actors for the Oscars 2016 has not just inspired a boycott, but it also made a division in Hollywood. This is specifically for those who are casting some producers and actors of the Academy's choices against those who are rising up for a no-show this year, according to Fox News.
The latest one to voice out opinions on this regard is actor Danny DeVito. He pointed out that racism in America can be one of the reasons why there is a lack of minorities on this year's prestigious awarding ceremony.
"It's unfortunate that the entire country is a racist country," DeVito said on Saturday while he showed up at the Sundance Film Festival. "So this is one example of the fact that even though some people have given some great performances in movies, they weren't even thought about."
It has been reported that Jada Pinket Smith and Spike Lee are not going to attend the Oscars this 2016 as an act of boycott. A number of actors have also expressed their calls to boycott through social media.
Actor Will Smith also joined the boycott on Thursday during his "Good Morning America" appearance, according to Staten Island Advance. "The nominations reflect the Academy, the Academy reflects the industry, and the industry reflects America," Smith said. "It reflects a series of challenges that we are having in our country at the moment. There's a regressive slide toward separatism, toward racial and religious disharmony, and that's not the Hollywood that I want to leave behind."
But not all actors are buying the Oscars 2016 boycott. One example is Clint Eastwood, who said he didn't know anything about it when he was asked by TMZ about the issue. However, he the 85-year-old added: "All I know is there's thousands of people in the Academy and a lot of them, the majority of them, haven't won Oscars."
