Tech giant Samsung SDI recently released a prototyoe of what seems to be the highest-density battery cell. This innovation can reportedly enable an electric vehicle to travel 372 miles or 600 km on a single charge, Korea JoongAng Daily reported Monday.

The all-new lithium-ion battery cell dedicated for electric vehicles showcased at the recent 2016 Detroit Motor Show is set to target the market in North America. Mass production for the said battery cell is expected to begin around 2020.

According to Samsung, the battery cell is expected to be the best performing kind among all EV batteries in the market as its density that has been increased by up to 30 percent.

In a statement by Samsung SDI CEO Cho Nam Seong, he shared that the company wishes to spearhead the era of EVs by presenting various products and solutions that are in-demand in the market.

One of the EV energy devices is a compact EV battery pack that is up to 30 percent slimmer than competing products. The other one is a low-voltage system solution which can replace lead storage batteries in non-EVs. These can be with lithium-ion batteries and has an option whether to add lithium-ion batteries to the existing batteries.

The energy system's efficiency is deemed to improve by 3 to 20 percent depending on the model. This innovation is seen to appeal to vehicle producers and even ordinary drivers in North America, where environmental regulations are getting tighter.

According to Charged Electric Vehicles Magazine Samsung SDI announced in December last year that they are to supply cylindrical 18650 format Li-ion battery cells for the new electric SUV iEV6S from one of China's top 10 domestic automakers, as featured in.The battery pack for the iEV6S uses about 3,000 of Samsung's 18650 cells as the two companies agreed and signed an MOU for the supply of 50 million battery cells this year.
