Self Driving Cars News: Crash Rates for self-driving cars are lesser than that of conventional cars.

According to a new study conducted by Alphabet Inc's Google Unit, a series of minor crashes were reported. The study has found that Crash rates for the conventional cars at all severity levels were higher than that of self-driving cars.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, Washington has revealed that self driving cars are involved in fewer crashes on average than those vehicles with drivers. The study was commissioned by Alphabet Inc's Google unit, which reported a series of minor crashes involving its autonomous fleet. It focused on only Google's fleet of more than 50 autonomous cars, which had logged 1.3 million miles in Texas and California in self-driving mode.

According to EyeWitnessNews, Google has reported that the test fleet has reported 17 crashes over the last six years, despite no fault of the self-driving cars. After making adjustments for severity and accounting for crashes not reported to police, the study estimated cars with drivers involved in 4.2 crashes per million miles while that of self driving cars in autonomous mode was 3.2 crashes per million miles.

According to the news, "Self-driving cars are quickly moving from prototype to reality", Cited CFO, "During this transition, the question that is first and foremost on the mind of the public and policymakers is whether or not self-driving cars are more prone to crashes."

2015 National highway Traffic Safety Administration Study had revealed that around 60 percent of property-damage-only crashes and 24 percent of all injury crashes were not reported to the Police. California law requires all crashes involving self-driving cars be reported to the Police.

The company Spokesperson Johnny Luu said Google has asked Virginia Tech"to look into the topic given the interest and develop a robust methodology to be able to make meaningful comparison between regular cars on the road as well as our self-driving cars", and that the study "will be helpful making apples-to-apples comparisons moving forward."

According to these News, as self-driving cars continue to be tested and their exposure keep increasing, the uncertainly in their event rates will tend to decrease.
