Data From The Korean Film Council Reveals 4 Local Movies Are Among The Top 5 In The Weekend Box Office

"Ant-Man" holds the top spot during its opening weekend at the South Korean box office, pushing Korean film, "Veteran," to the second spot after dominating for the past weeks.

According to the data from the Korean Film Council on Monday, the Walt Disney film has combined earnings of $9.25 million from 946 cinemas across the country during its opening weekend from September 4-6.

Initially released on July 8 in other countries, Peyton Reed's "Ant-Man" is an American superhero film based on Marvel Comics and stars American actor-comedian Paul Rudd.

Meanwhile, "Veteran" has earned $4.05 million over the weekend, dropping 44% from last week. Currently, its total sales now stands at $77.6 million, owing to 11.9 million admissions, Variety has noted on Sunday.

Released on August 5, "Veteran" is directed by Ryoo Seung Wan and features Korean actor Hwang Jun Min who play as a cop chasing a wealthy young man.

The Korean action movie has topped the local box office for four consecutive weeks before "Ant-Man" has taken the spot, surpassing the 1 million mark in just four days.

"Featuring both humorous details and large-scale spectacles, the film succeeds in hitting two birds with one stone," film critic Kim Soo Jung says - according to The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday.

On the other hand, Hong Won Chan's "Office" has made its debut over the weekend, landing on the third spot. The local thriller has been featured int the Cannes International Film Festival early this year under the non-competing category.

The fantasy drama "Beauty Inside" is at the fourth spot with 201,799 viewers, followed by "Assassination" on the fifth spot.

Meanwhile, "The Gallows" of Warner Bros. has earned $427,000 and Fox's action thriller "Hitman: Agent 47" has $297,000 over the weekend.
