Better Business Bureau Says Beware of Rental Scams, Offers Homeowners with Some Helpful Tips

Due to the worldwide pandemic, more and more people are relocating with hopes of avoiding getting inflicted with the Coronavirus. However, the Better Business Bureau says beware of rental scams.

Initially, you need to understand what you want in a rental house or apartment. A few of your criteria will include the amount of deposit and rental. It's also worth asking what's the landlord's policy regarding pets if you have one, especially dogs. Safety is another important concern when moving to a new home. Make sure that you're talking to the real landlord of the renting place, or you're just giving your money away to a scammer.

BBB representatives warned people who consider moving to a place to beware of rental scams. They are also providing homeowners a couple of tips to safeguard them from fraud.

BBB Communications Specialist Catherine Honeycutt said, "To any other renter or homeowner out there just be extra cautious this year. Although these renter scams have been going on for years it's really important, especially now that you're being watchful of these potential scams because they do seem more legitimate than ever."

Renters end up meeting with fake listings on countless websites. BBB offers some helpful tips to prevent renters from being scammed.

According to the non-profit organization, you need to meet the landlord in person and ask if the rent and deposit have not gone up. Check the property beforehand so you can see any signs of damage or vacancy. This will allow you to decide early if the place will suit you and your family's needs. Also, don't forget to protect your personal information.

Once you move in, make sure that you have inspected the whole place for any damage before filling out the move-in checklist. It will be your opportunity to mention damage or irregularities in the apartment before accepting a lease agreement.
