The Weeknd Bandages His Face During The AMAs, Reacts To Being Snubbed In The Grammys
It's not the first time Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, more popularly known as The Weeknd, has shown a questionable getup during award shows. Just this August, he showed up at the MTV Video Music Awards with his face all bloodied. This time, he showed up at the American Music Awards covered in white bandages.
Aside from accepting the award for Favorite Soul/ R& B album, the 30-year-old Canadian also performed his songs "Save Your Tears" and " In Your Eyes" along with renowned saxophonist Kenny G.
But his odd choice of wardrobe has nothing to do with being quirky or different. The Weeknd was actually trying to convey a powerful message by showing his bloody face and the white bandages. He was trying to show people the effects of drunk driving by showing the injuries you can get when an accident happens. His song "Blinding Lights" from his album "After Hours" alluded to this subject.
Meanwhile, the artist again made the trends after the announcements were made regarding the nominees for the upcoming 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. The artist received zero nominations despite the success of his fourth album. He called out the snub in a Tweet, calling the Grammys corrupt and in his words says "You owe me, my fans and the industry transparency..."
According to TMZ, The Weeknd was most likely snubbed as he made the choice to perform for the Super Bowl instead of the Grammy Awards. Sources say that both sides agreed that the performer will do both events, but not without butting heads with some executives from the voting body.
But according to Recording Academy Chief Harvey Mason Jr., through EW, that the voting for all categories actually ended even before The Weeknd announced his participation in the Super Bowl. He claims that he understands just how the artist is disappointed as his album was truly excellent.
