Bill Gates vs. Elon Musk: Microsoft Founder Doubtful of the Hyperloop One
Many thought that Elon Musk's Hyperloop idea will not come to fruition when it first gained attention in 2013. Musk is known for his big ideas yet many are doubtful due to the wonderful possibilities that it will bring. For some, it's just too good to be true.
To the surprise of many, five years after he talked about his concept, the tube-based transportation system is now in its development process in the Nevada desert. It is conveniently located where it couldn't attract too much attention allowing the development could progress in peace.
Hyperloop One aims to launch a commercial system by 2021. Despite the presence of impressive progress the Musk creation is getting, Bill Gates doesn't seem convinced.
Bill Gates Thinks 'Hyperloop One' Doesn't Make Sense
In a Reddit AMA held last Tuesday, Gates discussed several topics including transportation. A user asked Gates why his foundation (Gates Foundation) hasn't given transportation much of a thought. He said that electric cars and vehicles will be great things.
His answer then led to Musk's Hyperloop, "I am not sure the hyperloop concept makes sense - making it safe is hard," he said.
Gates didn't further elaborate on this matter. In light of this, the Hyperloop would have people in pods and they will be sent through tubes at speeds that could exceed 500 mph. The futuristic transportation system will also need to rely on a network of underground tunnels. Hence, the Boring Company, Musk's tunneling company, may need to secure several approvals from local governments. Some have already given their approvals whilst others remain skeptical of this transportation system project.
It isn't only Gates who casts doubt on Musk's idea. Other well-known business personalities such as the Delta CEO and Amtrak CEO Richard Anderson questions its relevance right now. He thinks that the idea seems to be far-fetched at this point.
