Jon Hamm Cast in Neil Gaiman's 'Good Omens' Series as Archangel Gabriel

"Mad Men" star Jon Hamm is joining the upcoming "Good Omens" series being developed by Neil Gaiman and BBC Studios. Hamm will play the role of the archangel Gabriel in the adaptation of the humorous fantasy novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

The A.V. Club reports that Amazon Prime Video has picked up "Good Omens" to air on its streaming service in 2019. The recent success of Starz series "American Gods," based on a Gaiman book, may have influenced the Amazon deal.

Gaiman will script all of the episodes and take on the role of showrunner. "Good Omens" is being adapted as a six-part series and it has recently entered production.

The original 1990 novel is actually titled "Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch." It follows the antics of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley, who work together to keep Apocalypse from taking place by interfering with the life of a boy who will be the Antichrist.

They eventually realize that something is wrong when harbingers of the Apocalypse begin to occur around the globe. For the child destined to be the Antichrist was someone else all along, not the boy whom Aziraphale and Crowley have been watching. They have to scramble to find the real Antichrist and defeat the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

In the novel, Gabriel is a minor character who barely appears in the book. Variety reports that Gaiman will be expanding the archangel's presence in the TV series. The writer explained that Gabriel is the leader of the angels and an attractive, charming guy. "We were fortunate that Jon Hamm was available, given that he is already all of these things without even having to act," said Gaiman. "We were even more fortunate that he's a fan of the books and a remarkable actor.
