‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ Sequel In the Works; Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig Not Coming Back
A "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" sequel has been confirmed, but the actors will be replaced, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the focus of the story shifts to the fourth book, "The Girl In The Spider's Web." Because of that, Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig won't be back for the second film.
Sony, the studio that produced the mystery thriller, also cut ties with the original director, David Fincher. Even with Fincher, both Craig and Mara refused to commit to the "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" sequel, according to Yahoo!. Sony initially planned to follow up with the second novel, "The Girl Who Played With Fire," but chose otherwise, since they're working with a new cast and a new director.
Scott Rudin, the first film's producer, will return to produce along with Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon. Yellow Bird, a Swedish production company that owns the rights to the Millenium book series, will also co-produce the "Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" sequel.
The book "The Girl In The Spider's Web" is the first book in the Millenium series that is not written by original author Stieg Larsson. It is written by David Lagencratz, who was tapped to continue the series when the original author died in 2004, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Just like the first three, it still follows the life of goth hacker Lisbeth Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist.
It is rumored that Swedish actress Alicia Vikander will take over the Salander role, as reported by The Wrap. Vikander had a string of films in the past few months, including "Ex Machina," "The Danish Girl," and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." According to The Wrap, "Vikander is one of Hollywood's brightest young stars." Playing an edgy character like the goth superhacker Salander would "counterbalance her acclaimed work in period dramas."
