South Korean President Park Geun-hye is officially impeached from office beginning December 9, 2016.

The motion to endorse Park's impeachment was done at 4:13 p.m today by South Korea's parliament and it received a favorable respond from the opposition lawmakers and defiant members of Park's ruling Saenuri Party. Out of the 300 members of unicameral National Assembly, 234 lawmakers voted in favor of Park's impeachment. Only 56 voted against the motion while the other 2 abstained.

Park is expected to receive an official letter of the result from the National Assembly in the next two hours and it will make her impeachment official.

According to the constitution, Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn will automatically become an interim leader as soon as Park officially leaves her office.

Park will be suspended for the next 180 days. During this period, the Constitutional Court will study the endorsed motion to decide whether the decision was fair and justified. If at least 6 members out of the 9 judges in the said court found the decision justifiable, Park will be officially removed from the position. South Korea will then be given another 60 days to elect the next president.

However, if fewer than 6 judges are in favor of the endorsed motion's result, Park will automatically return to her office.

The scandal that involved South Korea President Park Geun-hye and a close friend, Choi Soon-sil, had rocked the whole nation for the past months. The corruption-related scandal even gave way to mass rallies all throughout the nation.

The office of the president announced earlier this week that Park Geun-hye will officially resign from her office anytime this week. All of the country's opposition parties, however, agreed to go ahead in endorsing her impeachment through National Assembly by Friday, today, if in case no resignation is made official by Park on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.
