24-Year-Old Man Dies On Board Dublin-Bound Aer Lingus Flight After Being Restrained For Reportedly ‘Biting Another Passenger’

A man onboard an Aer Lingus flight died on Oct. 18 after being restrained by flight crew for becoming "extremely violent." Irish Mirror reported the following day that after the 24-year-old man was controlled, he turned unwell and later became unconscious before he was pronounced dead.

According to reports, the man is onboard a flight bound for Dublin when he "ran amok" and bit another passenger of the flight. After the incident, he was restrained by the aircrew. In addition, the crew also broadcasted emergency message to notify air traffic controllers on the incident.

The pilot reported the situation to the controllers at the Irish Aviation Authority's North Atlantic Communications Service centre before they made an emergency landing at Cork airport before 6:00 p.m.

Prior to the emergency landing, aircrew reported that a doctor onboard is treating the 24-year-old passenger, however, the man reportedly has no pulse.

Upon reaching Cork airport, 168 passengers and six flight crew were asked to get off the plane while paramedics responded to the incident.

Aer Lingus flight released a dispatch on the same day regarding the incident.

"Aer Lingus flight EI 485 Lisbon to Dublin, diverted into Cork due to a medical emergency on board. There were 168 guests and six crew members on board. The flight landed safely at 17.40 local time."

The Guardian noted Oct. 19 that police authorities interviewed the passengers and flight crew fort the investigation of the incident when the captain affirmed it was a "medical emergency." The police also revealed that the man, who was said to be unaccompanied, died even before the flight landed at Cork airport.

Further reports revealed that the man was not an Irish but believed to be studying in Ireland. On the other man, the other male passenger who got injured because of the incident was sent to the hospital shortly after the emergency landing.
