Samsung Gear VR vs PlayStation VR vs Oculus Rift: Which of these three virtual reality gaming devices are better suited for delivering a high-end gaming experience at an affordable cost?

With the Oculus Rift already available for preorder and the Sony PlayStation VR scheduled to hit the market later in the year, anybody who is planning to enrich their gaming with a brand spanking new VR console will inevitably be forced to ask this question.

Starting off with the form factor, the form factor and design details of the PlayStation VR are currently sketchy.

The Oculus Rift development kit two form factors were 1.3 x 14.7 x 7-inch (it is likely to change in the final product) as compared to the Samsung Gear VR's 201.9 x116.4 x 92.6 mm.

In terms of design and overall build only, the Gear VR seems to have outshined the Oculus Rift. However, judgments on aesthetics are always subjective and bound to vary.

Moreover, there's clearly no alternative to waiting for the arrival of the Oculus Rift and PlayStation VR to draw a conclusion on that front.

When it comes to the display, the Samsung Gear VR vs PlayStation VR vs Oculus Rift standoff turns even more exciting. Both PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift are likely to come equipped with OLED displays offering resolutions of 1920 x 1080p and 2160 x 1200p respectively. Meanwhile, the Gear VR brings you a SUPER AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440.

The refresh rate on the Gear VR is 60 Hz whereas that on the PlayStation CR is 120 Hz and 90 Hz and the Oculus is 90 H.

While experts may differ on the nitty-gritty, the clear winner here is the Oculus.

Its quad HD display will almost definitely be better than the Gear VR display. Meanwhile in terms of resolution, it outperforms the Sony VR.

In terms of hardware requirements, it all ends up being an apple vs orange comparison as they both target different segments of the market.

For Oculus Rift, users must have a PC with Windows SP1 or news along with Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater, 8GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD 290 or higher.

For Sony VR, users will require the PlayStation 4 whereas the only requirement for the Gear VR is a Samsung Galaxy flagship (S6, S6 Edge, S7 and so on).

At $99, the Gear VR is the cheapest of the three. The Oculus is priced at $599 whereas the PlayStation VR is likely to be priced at somewhere around $500.

If the prices of the mandatory accompanying hardware are taken into account, the Samsung Gear VR vs PlayStation VR vs Oculus Rift standoff clearly sways in favor of the Gear VR - especially for those who consider mobility and/or affordability as a primary criterion.
