Twitter's 140-character limit is surely the social media site's unique feature, allowing users to post short messages while on the go. Now, the company who made "tweets" a household term is developing a new product that will allow users to post longer than the limited character amount as reported by Recode.

While it is not yet revealed what the new social media product will be like, sources say that it would allow users to publish longer content than Twitter's 140-character limit. A company spokesperson declined to comment regarding the issue.

Prior to this update, the issue has been discussed frequently and many have argued over the years that the developers should expand it. The discussion over Twitter's 140-character limit has been going internally at the company for years, according to multiple sources, and has resurfaced in recent months under interim CEO Jack Dorsey. Currently, the company has been trying to find out new ways to expand its user base.

Apparently, Dorsey is supportive of this possible change, simply implying that he is doing his best in his position while Twitter is currently searching for its permanent CEO.

Another development to be launched by the company is called Project Lightning, a curated feed of tweets, photos and videos focusing on live events. The upcoming feature is aimed to highlight content that gets lost in Twitter's trademark fire hose of tweets that are normally found in its main feed, Wall Street Journal reports.

As for Dorsey, the current CEO was critical of some of the company's most recent product changes and he addressed the need for Twitter to reach more from the mainstream audience. The only question for the company is whether or not a long-form option would actually increase its user count. While it could encourage users to share directly to Twitter more often, it could also rival other platforms such as Facebook and LinkedIn since they allow their users to publish content that goes more than beyond Twitter's 140-character limit.

Will Twitter's plan make it to full development? The company might mix things up, but it is positive on the idea that tweaking its character limit would certainly help a lot for their improvement.
