'Underworld 5' Release Date Announced; Franchise To Be Adapted Into TV Series?

Kate Beckinsale will reprise vampire Selene in "Underworld 5." Production for the upcoming sequel took place in Prague, Czech Republic in October last year, working towards a release date this year.

However, Beckinsale's ex-husband, Lens Wiseman won't be directing "Underworld 5." Anna Foerster, an established cinematographer, will helm the project.

Beckinsale and Wiseman met on the set of the first "Underworld" film. The two married and continued to work together for a few more installments.

The director and actress called it quits after eleven years.

Wiseman confirmed with that an "Underworld" TV series is in development, but might not be finished by the time of the fifth movie's release date.

"Yes, there's been a lot of conversations and even development on what that series would be," Wiseman said in an interview with Collider earlier this month. "It's really appropriate for television, in terms of how those characters can really tie in, but also become something new. It's really an attractive space. I don't want to put a date on it because then that's going to be printed and it might not happen in that timeframe, but it is a thought."

Meanwhile, other cast members for the fifth film have been announced.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that "Divergent" actor Theo James, who appeared in 2012's "Underworld: Awakening" as vampire David, is returning to "Underworld 5" as the movie's male lead.

The movie will also include Lara Pulver, Peter Anderson, Bradley James, James Faulkner, Charles Dance and Tobias Menzies.

Little is known about the upcoming movie's plot, although it is rumored that it will see the return of half-vampire half-Lycan Michael (Scott Speedman).

"Underworld 5" will be produced by Lakeshore Entertainment's Tom Rosenberg and Gary Lucchesi from a script written by Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter).

"Underworld 5" will release in U.S. theaters on Oct. 21, 2016.
