Paramount Shelves ‘Terminator: Genisys’ Sequel; Studio Gives ‘Baywatch’ Film the Greenlight
The possibility of seeing a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel is becoming slimmer by the day.
This, after Paramount Pictures recently announced that it had pulled out the film from its scheduled May 19, 2017 release date, reported Deadline.
The sci-fi movie will instead be replaced by an onscreen adaptation of the 90s TV cult favorite "Baywatch" which will star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron.
Although studio executives made no further comments on this move, it didn't come as a total surprise to many observers.
"Terminator: Genisys," which saw the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger in his iconic cyborg role, only earned $90 million during its US run.
But surprisingly, the movie went on to rake in $440.6 million at the global box office, fueling rumors that Paramount might still decide to do a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel.
According to the Guardian, the movie was intended to be the first in a three part sequel which would unite Arnold Schwarzenegger with the younger actors Emilia Clarke and Jai Courtney.
However, the movie opened to poor reviews from critics, while reportedly underperforming well below Paramount's expectations at the North American market.
Prior to the release of "Terminator: Genisys" last year, the studio had even announced a June 3, 2018 release date for the third part of the sequel.
The rights to the "Terminator" franchise will revert back to its creator James Cameron by 2019.
With the "Terminator: Genisys" sequel sent to the backburners, Paramount is pinning its hopes on its tent poles such as "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible" and "Transformers."
The studio is also set to premiere this year a re-imagining of the video horror film "The Ring" as well as spin-offs "10 Cloverleaf Lane" and "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back."
It is however up to the audiences to decide if the "Baywatch" movie will be a worth replacement to the "Terminator: Genisys" sequel.
