George Clooney's Wife Amal Alamuddin Dissed By Maldives Foreign Minister; Statement Released

George Clooney's wife Amal Alamudding has been making the headlines of news reports recently as she has been actively campaigning to have former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed released from jail.

The human rights lawyer was recently interviewed via NBC News to talk about her case, specifically the human rights issues that are currently making Maldives top the headlines as well. She said that the people need to know about the deeper issues in the country, apart from knowing it to be a place where beaches are world-class.

"Democracy is dead in the Maldives," the 37-year-old said, speaking with Cynthia McFadden on the Nightly News With Lester Holt. "Literally, if there were an election now there would be no one to run against the president. Every opposition leader is either behind bars or being pursued by the government through the courts."

Nasheed is the former president of the famous beach destination place and is currently in jail under terrorism charges.

Meanwhile, George Clooney has released a statement to support his wife.

"It's tough when they're stabbing her co-counselor [defense lawyer Mahfooz Saeed] in the head a couple days before she gets there," the actor previously told ETOnline about what he thinks of Amal's current case. "It's a little nerve-wracking. But she's doing the right thing and she's doing it for the right reasons."

As reported, Alamuddin's co-counsel was stabbed in the head prior to her arriving to meet her client for the first time.

"I mean, it wasn't the most comfortable position to be in, but you know, I was determined to go," Amal said, as quoted by the source above. "It meant a lot to me to meet Nasheed, who I had read about and I considered a hero."

Despite all the current attention the case is getting, current Maldives Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon has slammed the lawyer, asking the people to not get carried away with her charm.

"My appeal to the rest of the world is to have a good understanding and not be persuaded purely by charm-filled Amal Clooney when she goes and gives some of these stories," he said about George Clooney's wife, as cited by Yahoo News
