'Captain Marvel' News: Scarlet Witch Took Her Spot In 'Avengers: Age Of Ultron'; Angelina Jolie To Direct Solo Movie?

Captain Marvel, who is still without an actress to play the role, almost made her debut in "Avengers: Age of Ultron." Last year, it was rumored that Carol Danvers was originally part of the movie's script, but was eventually cut out as development went on.

According to Birth. Movies. Death, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" director Joss Whedon had already shot visual FX plates of Captain Marvel flying into the Avengers' headquarters at the end of the movie, but was replaced with Thanos instead at the last minute.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige shed light on the matter and explained why Carol Danvers didn't make the cut to appear in the sequel.

[Captain Marvel] was in a draft," Feige said in an interview with MTV. "But to me, it would have done that character a disservice, to meet her fully formed, in a costume and part of the Avengers already when 99% of the audience would go, 'Who is that?' It's just not the way we've done it before."

Feige also revealed that the Captain Marvel plate shots were used to introduce Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch. [Note that Feige's statements were made prior to the movie even began production.]

"The way we reveal Scarlet Witch [in costume] at the end of the movie? Those were Captain Marvel plate shots," Feige admitted. "Joss said, 'We'll cast her later!' And I said, 'Yeah Joss, we'll cast her later.' [Whispers to an invisible associate who isn't Joss] 'We're not putting her in there!'"

Since the second "Avengers" film was released last year, several actresses have already been rumored to play Captain Marvel. The shortlist includes Emily Blunt, Natalie Dormer, Rebecca Ferguson and MMA fighter Ronda Rousey. While there's no shortage of talents who could bring Carol Danvers to life, her planned solo film is still without a director.

Forbes claims that Marvel Studios has tapped Angelina Jolie to direct their first female-led film following the actress' successful directorial debut in "Unbroken," although nothing has been confirmed yet.

Maybe this year Marvel will find their actress to play Captain Marvel and introduce her in "Avengers: Infinity War Part One."

"Avengers: Infinity War Part One" releases on May 4, 2018. The "Captain Marvel" solo film arrives on March 8, 2019.
