A 25-Year-Old Metal Band Just Sued Netflix Over the Name "Demon Hunter"

On Aug. 18, the Christian metal band Demon Hunter filed a federal lawsuit against Netflix, Netflix Studios and concert promoter AEG Presents, arguing that "KPop Demon Hunters" - the streamer's record-breaking animated hit - has effectively swallowed the band's name. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California by the band's corporate entity, Hyde Lane, Incorporated, alleges trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition. It demands a jury trial, restitution and treble damages.

Demon Hunter has been releasing music since around 2000 and put out its twelfth studio album, "There Was a Light Here," last September through its own label, Weapons MFG. Hyde Lane's trademark filings for "Demon Hunter" - covering recorded music, merchandise and live performances - predate Netflix's own applications for "KPop Demon Hunters," which the company began filing in August 2025 for merchandise tied to the film. The band's complaint leans on that timeline directly, describing itself as the "senior user" of the mark.

"I Won't Be Able to Afford Tickets to the Actual Show"

The lawsuit isn't arguing in the abstract. It cites specific instances of consumer confusion: a fan who paid $500 for top-tier tickets to a Demon Hunter show in Albany, New York, then asked for a refund after realizing the tickets weren't for the Netflix production, telling the seller they wouldn't otherwise be able to afford tickets to the "actual" KPop Demon Hunters show. A television producer reportedly approached the band's management believing they were in touch with the Netflix franchise. Social media users, the filing says, routinely tag the band in posts about the film.

The confusion has real commercial stakes because "KPop Demon Hunters" is no longer just a movie. Since its June 2025 release, the film has become Netflix's most-watched title ever, won two Academy Awards - Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, for "Golden" - and knocked "Happy Gilmore 2," itself the platform's biggest U.S. opening weekend ever, out of the top spot on release. Netflix and AEG announced a global concert tour built around the film's music in 2027, with tickets, cities and dates still to be confirmed through a waitlist on Netflix's Tudum site. That tour announcement is the specific trigger named in Hyde Lane's complaint: once Netflix and AEG began marketing "almost complete overlap" with the goods and services - live shows, merchandise, recorded music - that Demon Hunter had built its identity on for two and a half decades, the suit argues, the confusion stopped being incidental and became structural.

Netflix has pushed back publicly. A company spokesperson said in a statement: "These allegations are without merit. Netflix has created an Academy Award-winning global phenomenon with 'KPop Demon Hunters' that has inspired fans around the world with its powerful music, storytelling, and characters. We look forward to vigorously defending this matter."

A Small Band Against a Streaming Giant

The dispute lands in familiar trademark territory - a smaller, established rights-holder arguing that a much larger company's cultural reach has effectively erased its brand, regardless of who used the name first. Hyde Lane's filing makes that power gap explicit, arguing that Netflix and AEG's "greater size and strength" let them "eclipse Hyde Lane's Demon Hunter marks in the marketplace" and strip the band of "power over its commercial fate." Whether a federal court agrees that a 25-year-old metal band and a two-year-old animated franchise are actually competing for the same customers is now a question for a jury, not a press release.

No trial date has been set. The KPop Demon Hunters World Tour is still slated to launch in 2027, and Netflix has given no indication it plans to change the production's name while the case proceeds.
