SEVENTEEN S.Coups and Mingyu Break Records: 'HYPE VIBES' Tops Oricon and Billboard Japan Charts
SEVENTEEN's newest subunit has proven their commercial power in Japan, with S.Coups and Mingyu's debut mini-album achieving dual chart supremacy and setting multiple sales records.
Record-Breaking Sales Performance
S.Coups and Mingyu's first mini-album 'HYPE VIBES' sold over 880,000 copies during its first week, establishing a new benchmark for K-pop subunit albums. The duo surpassed the previous record of 787,000 copies held by their fellow SEVENTEEN members Jeonghan and Wonwoo.
The album's opening day proved equally impressive, with over 600,000 copies sold-the highest single-day sales figure for any K-pop unit album in Hanteo Chart history.
Japanese Chart Dominance
According to Oricon's October 9 announcement, 'HYPE VIBES' claimed the top position on both the Weekly Combined Album Ranking and Weekly Album Ranking for the October 13 chart (tracking September 29 to October 5). The Combined Ranking, which aggregates physical sales, digital downloads, and streaming data, showed the album earning approximately 105,000 points, with CD sales alone contributing over 103,000 units.
On Billboard Japan, the album secured first place on the Top Albums Sales chart for the same tracking period. The title track "5, 4, 3 (Pretty Woman)" featuring Lay Bankz reached number five on the Hot Shot Songs chart, demonstrating strong digital performance alongside physical sales.
Creative Approach and Musical Style
The six-track mini-album features S.Coups and Mingyu as co-writers and co-composers on every song, working alongside longtime SEVENTEEN collaborator BUMZU. The title track reimagines Roy Orbison's 1964 classic "Oh, Pretty Woman" as a contemporary disco-pop track, blending vintage appeal with modern production.
"We simply wanted to create music that everyone could enjoy, without language barriers," Mingyu explained in interviews. S.Coups added that their goal was to present authentic music without embellishment.
Expanding Asia-Pacific Success
Beyond Japan, 'HYPE VIBES' topped China's QQ Music Digital Best-Selling Albums chart in the EP category for both daily and weekly rankings. In South Korea, all six album tracks entered Melon's Top 100 chart upon release, while the album debuted at number one on the Circle Album Chart with over 830,000 copies sold.
The album also claimed the top position on Oricon's Daily Album Chart for three consecutive days following its September 29 release.
Unit Context Within SEVENTEEN
S.Coups and Mingyu, both members of SEVENTEEN's Hip-Hop Team, represent the group's fourth official subunit. The 13-member group has previously launched BSS (featuring Seungkwan, Hoshi, and DK), Jeonghan X Wonwoo, and Hoshi X Woozi as separate unit projects.
The duo performed at a fan showcase titled "VIBE ALIVE: Chill Moments" on October 5 at Seoul Women's University, where they premiered live performances of album tracks "For You" and "Fiesta." SEVENTEEN member Seungkwan made a surprise appearance as the event's MC.
SEVENTEEN continues their group activities with the 'SEVENTEEN WORLD TOUR [RIGHT HERE] IN U.S.', which includes performances in Tacoma, Los Angeles, Austin, Sunrise, and Washington D.C. through the end of October.
