‘Gravity Falls’ Season 3 Hopes Dashed; Series Creator Announces Season 2 Finale And New Project
"Gravity Falls" season 3 may no longer see the light of day, but there is still a bright spot for its creator Alex Hirsch.
In a recent interview with Variety, Hirsch revealed that he had agreed to develop an animated series for Fox.
Although details of the project have remained under wraps, Hirsch intimated that he had already made a deal for a script and a presentation for the show's pilot episode with Fox and Century Fox TV.
"I'm cooking up some brand-new weirdness," Hirsch said.
Despite dashing the hopes of fans, there is still a strong clamor for a "Gravity Falls" season 3, as the show has developed a cult-following similar to the live action-drama series "Lost."
"Gravity Falls" season 2 finale is concluding its 40-episode run with a hour-long episode to be aired on Feb. 15.
As the brains behind the well-loved cartoon series, the 30-year-old animator is being tapped by various outlets to develop projects for them.
Being described as an animation "wunderkid," Hirsch immediately grabbed the attention of many with the short films he produced after graduating in 2007 from CalArts.
He was then hired by Disney XD to help bring life to "Fish Hooks," and soon after "Gravity Falls," which is no longer being renewed for a season 3.
In announcing the "Gravity Falls" season 2 finale in a November Tumblr post, an emotional Hirsch said, "I wanted Gravity Falls to have a mystery that had a real answer, an adventure that had a real climax, and an ending that had a real conclusion for the characters I care so much about."
"This is very unusual in television and a pretty big experiment, and Disney for their part has been enormously supportive," he added. "I know that hits are rare in this business, and its hard to let one of them go, so I'm so grateful that this company has had the vision to let me start (and end) the show the way I always wanted to."
But despite Hirsch's announcement, fans are still hoping that the creator-producer will pull a surprise and do "Gravity Falls" season 3.
