‘Terminator Genisys’ Sequel Confirmed; $350 Million Overseas Earnings Is 'Hard to Ignore'
Paused "Terminator: Genisys" sequel finally sees traction, when Skydance executive Dana Goldberg confirmed that they intend to do another one, according the The Wrap.
The reboot of the 90's hit film earned more than $350 million on international territories, more than double the $155 million production budget.
When asked about the future of the franchise, Goldberg said, "Do we intend to have a next step of Terminator? Yes, we do," according to The Wrap. He was weighing in on having a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel because of the poor domestic performance of the movie, despite the big haul overseas.
He confirmed that the delay in production does not mean that they're shelving the movie for the time being. Instead of putting it "on hold," he prefers to call it "re-adjusting. The sequel, slated for a 2017 release, may get a different date after the readjustment that the producers initiated.
The biggest reason for pushing through with the series reboot is its strong overseas performance, breaking records in China, and making over $435 million worldwide, according to Cinema Blend. The only thing holding the producers back is the domestic performance, which is not enough to recoup the $155 million production budget.
Even some of the stars of the film are not sure if there will be a "Terminator: Genisys" sequel. Oscar winner J.K. Simmons said that there is "nothing yet," but he is hopeful that they will "make a couple more, but the trigger has not been officially pulled," as reported by Cinema Blend. Simmons is currently promoting a new film "Break Point."
When film distributor Paramount Pictures first announced the return of the Terminator series, there were already planned release dates even for the sequels. The sixth film was scheduled for release on May 19, 2017, while the seventh one is slated for Jun. 29, 2018, according to Screen Rant.
With delayed production because of the readjustment, sources stated that these dates could be pushed back by several months or even a year.
