South Asian Actress Simone Ashley Will Be The Leading Lady On 'Bridgerton' Season 2
Now that the second season of "Bridgerton" has been confirmed to be in the works, the production is also gradually announcing the new cast members. One of these is the South Asian actress who starred in shows like "C.B. Strike," Simone Ashley.
Daphne Bridgerton will find a rival with Simon Ashley's character, Kate Sharma, in the romantic period drama. The media are saying the South Asian actress's participation will spark what would be comparable to the rivalry of Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.
The new character, Kate Sharma, will try to get the attention of Jonathan's Bailey's Anthony Bridgerton, with the new season focusing on the heir of the Bridgerton family and Anthony's quest to find his ultimate bride, his Viscountess.
"Get ready to fall in love with Simone Ashley, who will play Kate in Season 2 of Bridgerton. Newly arrived in London, Kate is a smart, headstrong young woman who suffers no fools - Anthony Bridgerton very much included," her character description said.
"Bridgerton" season two will start production in spring in London. It will be based on the second novel of Julia Quinn in the series titled "The Viscount Who Loved Me," following the quest of Anthony.
The ethnicity of Kate Sharma is not actually Indian in the novel, but the producers of the web series are taking creative freedom with the adaptation. It is not the first time the show has moved beyond the barrier of the race with "Bridgerton" creator and showrunner Chris Van Dusen, as well as executive producers Betsy Beers and Shonda Rhimes casting several Black characters, such as Regé-Jean Page's. Critics of the show are also saying the characters in "Bridgerton" are diverse.
The mysterious Lady Whistledown has also expressed her excitement, writing about Kate Sharma on the official Twitter page of "Bridgerton," "Quite the juicy bit of gossip, dear readers ... This author is certainly looking forward to many a column covering Miss Kate Sharma."
