Is 'The Vampire Diaries' Returning? Ian Somerhalder Shares Insights
Is "The Vampire Diaries" returning for a new season? In his recent appearance on Andy Cohen's SiriusXM radio show, TVD actor Ian Somerhalder has responded to rumors that a ninth season of the hit The CW show is in the works. He also envisioned what his character Damon Salvatore and his brother Stefan, portrayed by Paul Wesley, would be now that they ended up taking the cure back to their human forms in the final episode of the eighth season.
The actor said he has "not heard anything about a season nine" after fans on TikTok went abuzz, saying that the new season is coming in 2021.
Ian Somerhalder plays the vampire Damon in the supernatural television series. He joins cast members Nina Dobrev who portrays the leading lady Elena Gilbert and her twin from the past Katherine Pierce, Paul Wesley, Candice King, Kat Graham, Joseph Morgan, Stephen R. McQueen, Matthew Davis, Michael Trevino, Phoebe Tonkin, and so much more.
"The Vampire Diaries" tells the story of Elena Gilbert, a teenager who lost her parents in a vehicular accident and fell in love with 162-year-old vampire Stefan Salvatore who rivals his older brother Damon as he returns to bring back his love, Katherine Pierce, a vampire who looks exactly like Elena. It is set in the fictitious town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, and also features 18th century New England, United States.
Developed by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, it is based on the popular book series under the same name by L.K. Smith. It ran eight seasons from 2009 to 2017.
In the radio show, Ian Somerhalder shared he had a "satisfying run" for the right seasons, saying it "ran a great course."
"That's what's so amazing. It's still living," the actor added.
There may be no official confirmation "The Vampire Diaries" is returning for a new season, but it is airing on Netflix. Fans can once again watch the popular vampire drama series' previous episodes on the streaming platform.
