There is little doubt that fans were depressed after seeing their favorite comic book heroes turn into dust in the shocking conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War. After all, most of these characters were still expected to appear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks. Needless to say, one of the most devastating deaths were those of the Guardians of the Galaxy who are set to return in a third film. But is it possible that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will take a completely different direction?

In Avengers: Infinity War, the Guardians were separated as Rocket and Groot decided to join Thor in his quest to find a weapon that could kill Thanos. Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, and Mantis set off for Knowhere to stop the Mad Titan from getting the Reality Stone from the Collector, but things did not work out the way they hoped. In the end, the only surviving members of the team were Rocket and Nebula. Could this mean that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will feature a completely new line-up?

There have been speculations that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hinted at new characters taking over in the third film. After all, the sequel had a post-credit scene featuring Sylvester Stallone's Stakar Ogord inviting Aleta Ogord, Charlie-27, Mainframe, Martinex, and Krugarr to work together again. Fans initially thought this could mean that some of the original members of the Marvel comic book team will play a major role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, since the events in Avengers: Infinity War, there is a possibility that the Ravagers will be the new Guardians line-up.

The deaths of the Guardians may have been hard for the actors who portrayed them but Zoe Saldana has already accepted Gamora's untimely death. The Avengers: Infinity War actor told LA Times that she "loved being a part of this unforgettable journey" and is proud that her character "is seen as a great role model for young women." Saldana also joked that she would "cry all the way to Avatar," referring to the sequel which is her next project. Unfortunately, this might confirm that Gamora will not be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

It is important to point out that Marvel has not yet confirmed which characters will appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 so it is best to take the details with a grain of salt. In the meantime, the third film is scheduled for release in 2020.
