HMD Global Launches Nokia 2, One Of Its Most Affordable Smartphones In The US Under $99

Nokia 2 has finally hit the store shelves in the United States. The low-end Nokia-branded smartphone is developed by the Finnish company, HMD Global. The device comes bearing a price tag of under $100.

The budget-friendly smartphone was unveiled at a launch event in India. HMD Global said the Nokia 2 will be available worldwide by mid-November for EUR 99. As promised, the device was launched in Russia earlier this month and South Africa after that. On Monday, November 20, the company debuted the smartphone in the US.

HMD Global began U.S. pre-orders for the entry-level smartphone at Amazon, B&H, and Best Buy. The unlocked model of Nokia 2 comes bearing a starting price tag of $99. It's worth noting that the handset will not work on CDMA-based networks including Sprint and Verizon. However, it is still compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T's bands, according to a report by XDA Developers.

Although Nokia 2 supports 4G LTE in the US, features including HD Voice, VoLTE or WiFi Calling are unlikely to work on either carrier. This is quite uncommon on unlocked smartphones, particularly ones carrying this price range.

The Nokia 2 sports a 5-inch HD LTPS display. Under the hood, it packs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor along with 1GB of RAM, which is paired with 8GB of onboard storage. This storage can be expanded up to 128GB via a micro SD card. Nokia 2 comes with Adoptable Storage support, which allows users to format their micro SD card and use it for internal storage. Android Headlines reported.

On the photography front, Nokia 2 sports an 8MP rear-mounted camera and a 5MP front shooter for the selfie addicts. Both cameras can record up to 720p video. Nokia 2 is backed by a robust 4100mAh battery, which is expected to keep the smartphone going for a few days on one charge. It features a headphone jack, but HMD Global has not added NFC.

The Nokia 2 will come running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat. The device will receive an upgrade to the latest Android 8.0 Oreo soon, but HMD Global did not confirm exactly when.
