Niall Horan Grabs 'New Artist of The Year' Award at The 2017 AMAs
Niall Horan easily snatched 'New Artist of The Year' award at the 2017 American Music Awards that was held on the night of November 19 in Los Angeles. The Irish boy followed former 1D member Zayn Malik's path, as he also claimed this top honor last year, with his debut album "Mind of Mine" post-departure from the band.
Sure, Horan was not really a new artist—he has been in the worldwide-phenomenal-boyband One Direction ever since the age of 17. This was not his first AMAs award he ever won either since he actually had taken home seven trophies between 2013 and 2015 when he was still in One Direction. But the band is currently on hiatus starting from 2016, and since then, each member started pursuing their own solo projects which started by Harry Styles' "Sign of The Times".
Still, the award he got that night was an honor Niall Horan had always wanted as a solo artist. The 24-year-old star was seen diligently promoting his nomination on Twitter ever since he was being nominated for the category. And as predicted, a huge number of One Direction fans were sending out their votes to support the singer. The hard work seemed to be paid off, as Horan finally triumphed over fellow nominees like Julia Michaels, James Arthur, Post Malone, and Rae Sremmurd.
Horan, upon receiving the award, said that it felt unbelievable for him, especially after a "hell of a year". He also thanked his fans for their great teamwork and making his dream came true. It was also a great year for him, after previously winning 'Favorite Breakout Artist' on People's Choice Award back in January and topped 'Choice Song Male Artist' category on Teen Choice Awards last August.
During the ceremony night, Niall Horan also performed one of his hit song "Slow Hands" which was another pre-release track he unveiled prior to his solo debut album "Flicker" that secured first place in both Ireland and the United States. The other pre-release song includes "This Town", an acoustic ballad with a country feeling in it, and "Too Much Too Ask"—a gorgeous, piano-led ballad about getting over heartbreak. While "Slow Hands" focuses on a funkier guitar vibe, the title track whose name went the same with his album's name, is another soft-and-sweet ballad, offering smooth violin tones.
Other winning artists at the 2017 AMAs included Bruno Mars, who won big this time, with claiming a total of 4 awards in four different categories, while the legendary Diana Ross won the 'Lifetime Achievement' award. The queen Lady Gaga was also able to take home the trophy after winning in 'Pop/Rock Female Artist' category.
Meanwhile, One Direction is rumored to be coming back as a whole after Liam Payne recently confirmed the news. Yet, nobody knows when the exact date of their long-awaited return is. As much as it's still a mystery, fans are eager to hear more from them, claiming that it's been too long since the members are all in one stage. Be patient, Directioners. The wait is almost over.
