Game of Thrones Spin-Off: ‘Exciting Script’, Release Date, and More

George R.R. Martin reveals that there will be five upcoming "Game of Thrones" spin-offs and all are in the works. Assuming that everything goes according to plan, the novelist says that all five of them would be released as soon as possible.

HBO CEO Richard Plepler told Variety that he has seen some early ideas on paper. "I think we will find with this embarrassment of [writing] riches an exciting property for us to move forward with," he said. "We are looking some things, I have read a couple of early bibles and I'm excited about what I've seen."

On the other hand, Martin says that two or even three of the five spin-offs might make it to the pilot stage, with one series to be unveiled in 2019 or 2020. In September, he also announced that co-executive producer Bryan Cogman has come on board to write the fifth spinoff. Cogman is probably the best addition to the writing team, given that he has been with "Game of Thrones" since the first season. In addition, he has written several remarkable episodes along the way and ranks as the show's third-most prolific writer. Some of his works include season 7's "Stormbron", season 4's "The Laws of Gods and Men", which showed Tyrion Lannister on trial, and season 3's "Kissed by Fire, which included Jaime Lannister's bathtub confession to Brienne of Tarth.

When Entertainment Weekly asked more about the "Game of Thrones" spinoffs, Cogman said that all the prequel projects are set before the events in the series and do not involve any members of the current cast. He also had a disclaimer that only one of the spinoffs might be aired, depending on the HBO programming president Casey Bloys.

As for the four other spinoffs, those will be penned by Brian Helgeland, Jane Goldman, Max Borenstein, and Carly Wray. Martin also shared that he will be a co-creator in Cogman's work and hinted that it has the best chance of airing first. Lastly, the "Game of Thrones" creator said that Cogman's assigned project will be a prequel rather than a sequel, and one that will delight most fans of the books is set during a very interesting period of Westeros history. Meanwhile, Conquest, the "Game of Thrones" mobile game, has just been released. You can watch the trailer below.
