'Boruto' Episode 29 Spoilers: Will Kagura Be Boruto's Enemy?
"Boruto: Naruto Next Generations" episode 29 continues the Hidden Mist Village arc as Shizuma's villainous plan unfolds. This will be a discussion of the leaked summary of the episode combined with some speculation on the role Suigetsu has to play in the storyline. Spoilers follow.
Before getting into the episode, let's take a look at some important plot threads that emerged in episode 28, "A Declaration of War!" Shizuma revealed that he was reforming the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist and invited Kagura to join them. Kagura, who feels indebted to Shizuma, joins the Swordsmen after Shizuma agrees to his conditions: that Boruto's life is spared and the Seven Swordsmen work to bring justice to the community.
Episode 29 is titled "The New Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist!" The Anime Scrolls reports that according to the leaked summary, the Seven Swordsmen will take the legendary weapons and move forward with their goal of a coup d'etat.
At this point, Kagura remains an unknown quantity. Despite becoming the focal character of the current arc, with Boruto now practically a supporting character, Kagura is as mysterious as ever. It would make a lot of sense for Kagura to be using a ploy on Shizuma, and only pretend to be on the Swordsmen's side.
It is also possible that Kagura will be consumed by the darkness within him. This is where Boruto comes into the story. It appears that Boruto's influence has been helping Kagura keep the darkness at bay. Leaked summaries have indicated that Kagura will be pointing a sword at Boruto in a future episode. So it seems likely that Kagura will turn to the dark side and fully ally with Shizuma, but Boruto will help Kagura realize the error of his ways and turn against the Swordsmen.
That is hopefully how it will go, since in the end this is Boruto's show, not Kagura's, and he needs to make a difference in the storyline. Anime News Network suggests that the main purpose of Boruto right now is to provide a character parallel to Kagura. But that doesn't really work. Another possibility is that the show is laying the groundwork for Kagura to become a major antagonist in Boruto's life. That could be an exciting direction, but it feels unlikely to happen.
Another notable development last episode was the appearance of Suigetsu. It's not yet clear what his role will be in this arc. But according to the leaked summaries, an unnamed individual will suddenly intervene in the conflict between Shizuma, Kagura, and Boruto. Chojuro has always been a possibility for this mystery character, but now Suigetsu has become the leading candidate.
