'The Winds of Winter' Release Date: Why George R. R. Martin Is Still Mum About It

George R. R. Martin wins Outstanding Drama Series for 'Game of Thrones' at the 67th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at Microsoft Theater on Sept. 20, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.

The "Game of Thrones" Season 7 premiere left fans hanging for more action and more answers. Readers of the book "The Winds of Winter" wonder if the book will be out before the last season of the TV show would be over. A fan even made a theory about its release date.

"The Winds of Winter" author George R. R. Martin released an excerpt from the book on May 10, 2016 on his website. But after that excerpt, there were no verified details about the book or its release date. When a reader asked why "Wild Cards" updates were more frequent than the "A Song of Ice and Fire," the author said frequent updates would just anger fans like what happened on "Dance with Dragons."

Although Martin is very fond of "Wild Cards," he said that he would put his project on halt until he finished "The Winds of Winter" and probably "Dream of Spring," as well." "Dream of Spring" will be the last book in his "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.

Originally from a Reddit user, a fan theory about "The Winds of Winter" release date is making rounds on the Internet after being featured by Paste Magazine. The theory was based on Martin's latest blog post that consists of a picture of a city attacked or possibly co-inhabited by numerous dragons. The picture's caption read, "Alas, alas, that great city Valyria, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come."

The caption was revealed to be adapted from a biblical quote about ancient Babylon. The quote was from Revelation 18:10 from King James Version of the Bible. According to the theory, Revelation 18:10 may be a hint that indicates the release date of the book.

The theory made sense because Oct. 18 is three months from now. Martin has previously mentioned before that the publisher could get his books out within three months if they were in a rush. The series will have two different endings if "Game of Thrones" ends before the book.
