BLACKPINK Talk About Being Edgy Yet Girly In New Song, ‘As If It’s Your Last’

BLACKPINK has made a comeback with 'As If It's Your Last' where they displayed a more girly and pinkish concept. The quartet had one of the strongest debuts last year with instant hit tracks 'Whistle' and 'BOOMBAYAH'. The girls initially showed a more edgy concept but now with a new summer song, the group decided to try on a look that fits with their contemporaries in the K-pop arena of girl groups.

During a media interview at YG Entertainment's headquarters, BLACKPINK member Jisoo stated, "Girl groups tend to shine in the summer season. We've come back with a song that better suits the summer mood." 'As If It's Your Last' doesn't stray far away from the sound of their previous tracks. The latest song is a hip-hop electro song with tribal beats, a staple genre for the YG girl group. The title track is produced by in-house YG producer Teddy, Future Bounce and Lydia Paek. 'As If It's Your Last' is approachable and catchier than past BLACKPINK songs, and is in line with the summer hits that listeners love, according to reviews.

BLACKPINK confessed that it wasn't easy to switch up their concept. The members revealed that it was difficult acting girly and cute during the filming of 'As If It's Your Last'. According to Rose, "Our latest concept is about being refreshing and bubbly. It was a bit awkward and embarrassing when filming such scenes." However, BLACKPINK isn't ready to give up their girl-crush, edgy look yet. They said that they still incorporated their tough girl attitude in the music video for 'As If It's Your Last' while showing a new girlish side.

Jisoo said. "We wanted to capture a girlish image but also worked hard not to lose our girl-crush spirit." With a new shift in artistic direction, BLACKPINK will also display a more public-friendly image this time around. They hope to do more appearances on variety shows - something YG artists aren't known to do. Furthermore, they want to be recognized not just as the only girl group from YG. According to Rose, "Our goal is to be recognized as a YG artist, not as the only girl group within YG."
